With the help of the ICEYE network of SAR satellites, it is now possible to continually monitor both large and small areas all over the world – every few hours, day or night, and in any weather. ICEYE 136m 304metheringtontechcrunch.
The first modest SAR satellite network in the world is being managed by ICEYE. An autonomous ICEYE SAR satellite network enables unmatched global imaging revisit rates. Multiple times daily, the constellation provides images of specific areas of interest taken from various angles. 136m Series 304metheringtontechcrunch.
The ever-expanding constellation, which will provide both quick tactical acquisitions and regular daily global revisit rates, will give users access to imaging capabilities that have previously been beyond of their reach. ICEYE is a Finnish microsatellite manufacturer. The University Radio Technology Department of Aalto University founded the Espoo-based business ICEYE in 2014. The president and co-founder of ICEYE is Rafa Modrzewski. Iceye Series 304metheringtontechcrunch.
The university nanosatellite team Aalto-1 started the ICEYE project. Technical teams were asked to enrol in a combination course given by the Aalto Business School and the Stanford University Technology Ventures programme. Students may enrol in the course during the 2012 spring semester. All parts of creating and utilising synthetic aperture radar were to be mastered by the crew.
Founder.org, Lifeline Ventures, and Founder.org helped ICEYE achieve $2.8 million in capital from True Ventures in addition to the $2.8 million in R&D investment provided by the SME Instrument under EU Horizon 2020. 136m 304metheringtontechcrunch.
Draper Nexus led a $13 million funding round that included a $8.5 million investment round in August of last year. In 2018, the business introduced ICEYE-X1, a microsatellite proof-of-concept equipped with a SAR sensor. It was launched on January 12, 2018. A $13 million investment round, which also included a $8.5 million fundraising round, was made available to ICEYE in May 2018. Four more ICEYE investors—OTB, Tesi, Draper Esprit, and Promus Ventures—participated in the investment round. According to ICEYE, two SAR satellites were successfully launched in July 2019. These SAR systems were launched on July 5, 2019, as part of an Exolaunch rideshare mission. Iceye 136m 304metheringtontechcrunch.

ICEYE finished a $87 million Series C funding deal in September 2020, and it went better than expected. The funding round included participation from both Luxembourg Future Fund and New Space Capital. ICEYE is now supported with $152 million.
Three further SAR satellites were launched by ICEYE using EXOLAUNCH in January 2021 as part of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 smallsat rideshare mission. Following the launch of these three more spacecrafts, ICEYE is now in command of the largest, most manoeuvrable SAR satellite network in the world, providing 24/7 observation and open commercial access.
In July 2021, ICEYE launched 4 SAR satellites using EXOLAUNCH as part of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 smallsat rideshare mission. 14 satellites, including both commercial and dedicated client missions, were successfully launched into orbit with the help of this flight by ICEYE.
The 15th and 16th SAR satellites from ICEYE were successfully launched into orbit in January 2022. Seraphim Space, a seasoned investor, served as the round’s leader and it was worth $136 million. It was completed in February 2022. In addition to these companies, new strategic investors in ICEYE include BAE Systems, Kajima Ventures, and Tokio Marine. Participants in the fundraising round included Molten Ventures, OTB Ventures, True Ventures, C16 Ventures, Chione Ltd, Services Group of America, the UK’s NSSIF, Space Capital, and Promus Ventures.
